They’d been named “Best Couple” in the senior superlatives. Anyone with any knowledge of how voting had shaken out would have told you it was basically unanimous (I mean some people had put in a word for Clint and ‘Tasha, but it was never even a contest, really.) Only Tony and Loki could pull off being so nauseatingly into each other while making it seem so fucking cool; casual and yet utterly committed.

No one really knew how they did it, either. That was part of the magic. How the two possibly most narcissistic assholes in the school had (1) found each other, (2) decided to start dating and then (3) had the audacity to survive 4 years of high school together while (4) running in completely different circles was surely some kind of witchcraft. But break-ups were for ordinary mortals. They fought explosively, sometimes for days at a time, but Tony would always come back with that look on his face. Loki would sigh, and look up from his book in that windowsill where he was always reading, roll his eyes, slide down, and hook his hand in the crook of Tony’s proffered elbow.

It was the beginning of 12th grade when, Loki, who had always been the smaller of the two (and Tony loved it, fawning over him, draping himself over the shorter boy’s shoulders at every possible opportunity), finally started to grow. Tony would probably never fully recover from the fact that Loki passed him just in time for prom, that suddenly he was looking up when they spent most of lunch kissing behind the baseball fields. He learned to adjust, though, and even came to enjoy the way Loki would come up behind him and wrap long arms around his waist.

There was never a question that they would go to school near each other, that Tony’s heart has been set on MIT since he was old enough to assemble a rocket. Somewhere along the line, Loki had just made it part of his calculations, so that when the acceptance letter for Harvard came, he locked himself in his room, and slid down against the back of his bedroom door, and let himself relax, fully for the first time since he’d hit “submit” on his application package so many months ago. He hastily wiped a wet drop off his phone screen as he tapped out with slim, quaking fingers: “Harvard, class of 2017.”

My head canon had always been that Loki goes to Cambridge, but I’m still debating for this AU cuz I want them to stay closer together.
